An Introduction to Yeast Infection and Diaper Rash
At some point, almost every child who wears diapers will experience diaper rash. Also known as diaper dermatitis, diaper rash is a general term that describes any of the inflammatory skin conditions that can develop in the diaper area. Exposure to moisture and ammonia coming from urine and feces, contact with harsh soaps and scrubbing too hard while cleaning the area, are some of the many factors that contribute to the appearance of diaper rashes. The skin can become infected with pathogenic organisms such as bacteria once it is irritated and inflamed, making the condition a whole lot worse.
Unfortunately, the majority of mothers are not aware that aside from bacterial infection, yeast infection and diaper rash are closely related too. Candida albicans is the fungus that causes the skin irritation referred to as "yeast diaper rash" or Candida diaper dermatitis". Although the condition can be mild, it can develop into a health issue that requires immediate medical attention. The physical appearance of the symptoms of the diaper rashes sometimes vary depending on the cause of the problem. Conditions that are caused as a result of yeast usually appear in the form of a very red and shiny oval lesions, with scales and tiny dots surrounding it(known as satellite lesion). Please note that it is imperative that you take your child to a medical expert for evaluation and treatment if you observe blisters and solid rashes that bleed. Prevention is the best treatment for diaper rash and yeast infection. Here are a few general guidelines that you can follow at home in order to protect your baby from getting infected and irritated with Candida:
Yeast infection and diaper rash is often treated with anti-fungal medications in the form of ointment and creams. Generally, diaper rash lasting less than 24 hours only requires a hydrocotisone cream. The medication may be applied one to two times during the first day. An anti-fungal cream such as clotrimazole is recommended for diaper rash that has already lasted more than 24 hours. This treatment can be used for a period of three to four days. Be sure to apply a barrier cream such as zinc oxide and Aquaphor after change if your child's yeast diaper rash is accompanied by loose stools or frequent bowel movement. Contrary to popular belief, yeast infections are conditions that are not just exclusive to women . Since Candida is present in the body of all humans, yeast infection can affect anyone – women, men, children, and even babies . In infants, however, yeast infection occurs in the form of Candida diaper dermatitis. Fortunately, babies do not have to go through so much suffering because with proper management and treatment, yeast infection and diaper rash can be remedied easily. |
